The Hare is a section of the larger tapestry, The Forest, which was a collaboration between William Morris, Philip Webb and John Henry Dearle, in 1887. The design is one of William Morris’ most successful compositions. It uses a dense cover of trailing acanthus leaves and five studies of animals and birds. The work was woven at Merton Abbey by Morris and Co.’s most senior weavers William Knight, John Martin and William Sleath.
William Morris was an artist, designer, craftsman, writer and socialist who had a huge impact on the fashions and ideologies of the era. Morris was instrumental to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production. His work crosses various mediums, from book designs to carpets and textiles.
